A Proposal for US Participation in the Extreme Universe Space Observatory Mission
PI: James H. Adams, Jr., NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center

This is a proposal for US participation in the European-led Extreme Universe Space Observatory (EUSO) mission on the International Space Station.

EUSO will investigate the highest energy radiation sources in the Universe by measuring cosmic ray extensive air showers from space. With its large collecting power, EUSO will extend the energy spectrum and measure the composition and arrival directions of these cosmic rays to address and perhaps resolve the mystery of these extreme energy events. EUSO may also detect high-energy neutrinos, ushering in the era of neutrino astronomy. This gives EUSO the potential to make important discoveries in astrophysics, high-energy physics, cosmology and/or fundamental physics.

The proposed US hardware contribution to EUSO is the optical subsystem. Large space optics is a unique U.S. capability. The Space Optics Manufacturing Technology Center at Marshall Space Flight Center, NASA's source for large space-qualified optics, will provide this hardware. This contribution will enable the EUSO mission. US scientists will participate in all aspect of EUSO data analysis and interpretation.

As the pathfinder for a future US-led Orbiting Wide-angle Light-collector (OWL) mission, EUSO will determine the effectiveness of space-based measurements and provide the experience and heritage NASA needs to confidently invest in the OWL mission.
